Tampa Electric has supplied the Tampa Bay area with electricity since 1899. Its West Central Florida service area covers 2,000 square miles, including all of Hillsborough County and parts of Polk, Pasco and Pinellas counties. Over 635,000 residential, commercial and industrial customers depend on Tampa Electric for reliable power and value-added energy services. The company has nearly 4,000 megawatts of generating capacity and is currently in the process of repowering its second-largest coal-fired facility to environmentally friendly natural gas. The other businesses within TECO are TECO Coal, TECO Transport and TECO Guatemala. The coal mining division produces synthetic fuel as well as conventional coal and is located in Corbin, Kentucky. TECO Transport is a river, gulf and ocean transportation business, transporting coal and other dry bulk commodities to ports along the Mississippi River and abroad. TECO Guatemala owns two power plants with long term sales agreements, as well as an ownership interest in Guatemala's largest distribution utility. Founded in 1895, Peoples Gas is Florida's largest regulated natural gas provider, and was acquired by TECO Energy in 1997. The company serves nearly 330,000 residential, commercial and industrial customers through more than 9,200 miles of system infrastructure. With a presence in most of Florida's major metropolitan areas, and many of Florida's fastest growing markets including Southwest Florida and the Ocala region, Peoples Gas has added 140,000 new customers since 1997. The company works closely with builders and developers throughout the state to provide the option of efficient and lifestyle-enhancing natural gas appliances. CGS is owned and operated by the City of Clearwater and operates over 700 miles of underground gas main. It also handles the supply and distribution of both Natural and Propane (LP) gas throughout northern Pinellas County and western Pasco County. Residential customers make up nearly 85% of Clearwater Gas’ customer base. CGS provides gas appliance sales and service, construction and maintenance of underground gas mains and service lines, and 24-hour response to any gas emergency call within the service area. They maintain an appliance showroom with a basic line of gas appliances for sale, and have a complete service and repair department to maintain residential and commercial gas equipment. Clearwater Gas System is regulated for safety by the Florida Public Service Commission and the Federal Department of Transportation and has been serving customers in the Clearwater area for over 75 years. In 1959, when natural gas transmission lines were extended to peninsular Florida, CGS discontinued the manufacturing of gas and began receiving piped natural gas from Florida Gas Transmission. Since 1923, CGS has provided gas service to the Florida Suncoast Community and is proud to be a community-based, full-service energy provider.
