If someone dropped you blindfolded into a chair at the Oasis or the Iguana Grill, two restaurants with excellent
Lake Travis views, you would never know you were in Texas. At least not until you read the menu!
Lake Travis is one of the Central Texas Highland Lakes. It begins at Mansfield Dam, which is about 30 minutes
from downtown Austin and winds its way a bit over 63 miles northwest through the Hill Country. The lake is
not very wide, but it is deep. Originally designed for flood control, Lake Travis is now one of the most popular
places for recreation in the state. It is also one of the most desirable places in Texas in which to own real estate.
Lake Travis real estate ranges from homes on cliffs with absolutely dramatic views to gently sloping lake lots to
homes tucked away on private coves. The view over Marshal Ford Marina (left) will give you an idea of how
dramatic a view one might have.
Communities on Lake Travis range from exclusive, gated communities to golf communities to unrestricted communities.
On the south side is Lakeway, a city of around 12,000 people as I write this in March of 2007. Lakeway has everything
from waterfront homes to homes on golf courses to homes with great views. Once fairly rural, Lakeway is now a
bedroom community of Austin and is around 40 minutes from the downtown Austin area.
Not far from, but very different from, Lakeway is Apache Shores. Apache Shores is an eclectic little subdivision with
everything from homes on Lake Austin to secluded homes with nice canyon views to funky glass-walled homes.
